Description

Budgies are parakeets that have been split into many different species. Budgie is the common name for the species Budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus . Budgies are popular pets in almost all parts of the world. Budgies are not indigenous to Nigeria so they would be exotic pets in Nigeria

Budgies are also known as shell parakeets because their cheek pouches can expand quite a bit. Budgies come from Australia and were first imported to England by German sailors in 1840.

The budgie is 19 centimetres (7.5 in) long and around 30 grams (1 oz) of weight on average for an adult bird (aviary birds tend to be significantly larger than those kept as pets). Budgies have long tail feathers and a small beak. Budgies are known for their beautiful, vivid coloured plumage and their fast, twisting flight. Budgies can live around 10 to 12 years but it is not uncommon for them to live twice that age if well cared for. Budgies breed in northern Australia from July until December or January then travel back down south before breeding again during the next summer months. Budgie eggs take around 21 days to hatch and the female budgie will usually lay between 5 to 8 eggs at one time (budgies should ALWAYS be housed as pairs or more)

Budgie nests tend to consist of a loose twig base, grass, and sometimes feathers. Budgies are preyed upon by cats, snakes, large lizards, birds of prey, etc. Budgies will lay between 5 to 8 eggs at one time

Budgie diets consist mainly of grasses and leaves but they also enjoy eating seeds. Budgies in the wild obtain needed nutrients from small insects that they find on branches while climbing around in trees. Budgies kept as pets should always have fresh food and water available to them since most budgie breeders recommend bird seed mix be the only thing budgies eat (this is not true)

The average life span for budgies is 6 to 7 years in captivity where they are housed indoors with their owners all the time however in the wild budgies are lucky to live 6 months. Budgie are very popular pets because they are cute, small, cheap, and easy to care for however it is important that humans do not try to keep more than 2 or 3 budgies per person in order to ensure that each bird gets enough attention
