Description
The Eclectus Parrot is a species of parrot found in the rainforests and mangrove forests located in northern Australia, New Guinea, Maluku Islands and Sulawesi. Eclectus Parrots are also sometimes referred to as Eclectus Parakeets.
This colourful bird is able to make sounds that mimic human speech. Eclectus Parrots have been observed imitating the sound of car horns, camera shutters and even a crying baby! These birds can live up to 50 years with proper care. Eclectus show affection by head-bobbing toward their owner or familiar human companion.
Eclectus parrot natural habitats include subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. Eclectus parrots require a good amount of personal space and therefore should be provided with at least an 18 x 18 foot (5.5 x 5.5 m) cage that is 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 m) tall and wide, with 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1 to 2 cm) bar spacing . Eclectus Parrots prefer toys over food as a source of entertainment.
In the wild Eclectus Parrot’s natural predators include Cougars, Eagles, Hawks, Owls and Perentie Monitors . In captivity Eclectus Parrot’s natural predators include Cats or Dogs if left outside unattended due to their size .
Eclectus parrots are seasonal breeders and breed year round in captivity. Eclectus Parrot’s lay 2-5 eggs (average clutch size is 3).
