Sulphur crested cockatoos

Description

Sulphur crested cockatoos are the second largest of the white cockatoo species. Sulphurs have a white body with yellow crest feathers, tail and wing tips. They also have bare patches of pink skin on their cheeks, just underneath each eye, that’s known as an ‘earring’. Sulphurs are well known for being one of the noisier cockatoo species, especially in captivity because they are often kept as pets. Sulphur Crested Cockatoos love to make noise!

Species name: Cacatua galerita

Lifespan in the wild is unknown but Sulphurs can live into their 40s when well cared for. Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos are not listed on any CITES appendix or state ‘endangered’ in the wild. Sulphurs are listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN.

Breeding a Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo in captivity is common because of their beautiful appearance and ability to mimic human speech. Sulphur Cresteds can learn many words and phrases, even though they may prefer to whistle tunes instead of speaking specific words. Sulphurs have been known to imitate other birds, dogs barking and other noises that can be heard around them including doorbells and alarm clocks! Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos have a life expectancy between 40-75 years when well looked after. Sulphurs enjoy a variety of foods including seeds, fruit and vegetables. Sulphurs need a high protein diet to keep them healthy and free from disease. Sulphurs may become aggressive towards humans if not given enough attention or left on their own for too long. The Sulphur Crested Cockatoo can be loud, especially when they’re kept as pets inside the home.
