Description

Background

The Great Dane also known as German Mastiff or Danish Hound is a dog breed which originated in Germany. The name of the breed is pronounced as “grat dahner” which means hunters of great game . It should not be confused with the English Mastiff, from which it was derived. They are an affectionate breed that needs lots of attention from its owners and would do best when they’re with their humans most of the time.

Characteristics

The Great Dane has a short, smooth coat that can come in different colors such as brindle, black, blue, harlequin, fawn and mantle harlequin. This kind of color makes them difficult to differentiate from other kinds of dogs especially if seen from a distance. They have a white blazes on their chest and necks, black muzzle and ears. Great Danes also have a well kept and clean coat that can be brushed weekly to avoid any tangles or mats in the fur which could be uncomfortable for them when it happens. Great Dane’s eyes are dark brown in color with long eye lashes to avoid anything from getting into their eyes while running around. Great Danes generally weigh at least 100 pounds but there are exceptions when they weigh less than that because of hereditary or genetic conditions such as osteopetrosis and pituitary dwarfism . Great Danes tend to resemble a tall and lanky dog look rather than an obese one because if they’re overweight, it would cause serious health problems for them such as breathing difficulties, joint problems, etc. Great Danes have a maximum height of 30 inches and a minimum weight of 100lbs. Great Danes are generally known as “gentle giants” because they’re very sensitive to any kind of sound that would come from the television, radio or sounds from outside the house.

Personality

Great Dane’s personalities vary but it is recommended for first time dog owners to take care of one regardless if it has been trained or not simply because Great Dane’s tend be very needy which makes them want attention from their owners most of the time. Great Dane’s can live up to 7 years old at most and Great Dane puppies might be difficult for new owners to deal with mostly because they could chew on anything including furniture and shoes making training them harder especially when Great Dane’s are still in their teething stage. Great Dane’s can live just fine in small spaces and in big houses because they tend to lay down most of the time when they’re not running around and requires little exercising compared to other dog breeds. Great Dane’s can be trained fairly easily but require lots of attention from their owners when it comes to housebreaking because Great Danes would go potty anywhere inside the house if not fully potty-trained . Great Dane’s could also seem like children, playful and mostly wants to play with anyone who is willing to play with them. Great Dane’s should be fed twice a day or more often depending on how active they are whether indoors or outdoors . Great Dane’s coats need minimal brushing to avoid any serious matting and Great Dane’s should be taken out running every once in a while because Great Danes are known to be escape artists. Great Dane’s should not be overfed or they might suffer from bloat which is the swelling of their stomach that could cause serious problems if not treated immediately. Great Dane’s need lots of attention, time, patience and understanding to make Great Dane ownership easy both for new owners and veteran Great Dane owners.

Health

Great Danes are generally healthy dogs but their size can cause or contribute to some health problems which are mitral valve disease , gastric torsion/bloat, hip dysplasia , osteosarcoma, hypertrophic osteodystrophy, cardiomyopathy , patent ductus arteriosus, Von Willebrand’s disease , subvalvular aortic stenosis and wobbler syndrome . Great Danes are also known to be very sensitive to sound which makes Great Danes prone to ear infections if not fully cleaned. Great Danes are also susceptible to heat stroke because they cannot cool themselves down efficiently because Great Dane fur lacks an oil producing gland thereby making Great Danes more likely to overheat especially in hot temperatures. Great Danes should not be overweight or it would cause serious health problems for Great Danes with their short noses that resemble what is called Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome which causes Great Danes to have difficulty breathing.

Great danes originated from Germany as Great Danes were created in order to be used as hunting dogs with their large size and Great Dane’s are also known to be very good guard dogs. Great Danes are known to have a great temperament making Great Danes easy for new owners which is why Great Danes are so popular these days. Great Danes tend to eat less than other dog breeds because of their small stomachs which makes Great Dane feeding costs cheaper compared to other dog breeds.

Life Expectancy

Great Danes have a life expectancy of 7 years old at most simply because Great Dane’s have shorter lifespans even if they’re fed properly, exercised, etc. Great Danes do not require lots of exercise but it would help Great Dane’s keep fit by taking them out running or walking with Great Dane’s harness on whenever Great Danes are fully potty-trained. Great Danes are known to be very loyal and protective of their owners so Great Danes would defend anyone attacking Great Dane’s owners, even at the cost of Great Dane’s own lives. Great Danes do not bark excessively but they would bark when someone is trying to break into Great Dane’s house or at strangers who Great Danes does not recognize. Great Danes are big dogs which makes them easy targets for dog-bullies which mean that Great Dane owners should socialize Great Danes with other animals starting when they’re puppies so that Great Danes would grow up to be more sociable pets.
