The Maltese dog breed is a small purebred from the toy group. Maltese dogs are known for being sociable and loving to be around people, as well as having a fine reputation among all other canine breeds. Maltese dogs have a life expectancy of twelve to fifteen years and weigh no more than seven pounds! Maltese dogs are one of the oldest known breeds to exist. The Maltese dog breed was kept by noblemen from 1560 to 1790 in the Mediterranean area. Maltese Dogs were also known as "Ye ancient dogge" in some writings from roughly 1570 AD, which would make it one of the most ancient breeds known today. Maltese dogs have been named after an island near Sicily called Malta, where they were a popular breed. Maltese dogs have a very good reputation among most dog breeds, and Maltese dogs are often referred to as Malteser Dogs in some English-speaking areas.
The Maltese is a toy breed with long flowing white hair. Maltese dogs stand from 8 to 10 inches high at the shoulder, weigh no more than 7 pounds when fully grown, and have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. They are classified in the Toy Group by the American Kennel Club and in the Companion Dog Group (CDG) by The Kennel Club (UK). Maltese dogs need regular brushing and grooming; especially if kept as an indoor dog or city pet. Without proper grooming, Maltese can quickly develop serious mats on their hair. Maltese dogs are one of the oldest known breeds to exist; Maltese dogs originated on the Mediterranean island called Malta, which is why Maltese dogs are often called Malteser Dogs in some English-speaking areas, and Malti in most European countries. The Maltese dog breed has been known for centuries as an ancient breed, mentioned by the likes of Aristotle and Pliny the Elder!
Maltese dogs can live up to 15 years but usually live between 12 and 13 years if properly cared for. Maltese dogs need regular exercise, brushing their teeth regularly (as they have lots of tiny baby teeth) and grooming with a brush or comb at least twice a week. Maltese dogs should watched carefully around younger children because Maltese dogs are very delicate and their bones break easily. Maltese dogs can be left alone at home without problems as Maltese dogs are relatively inactive, if Maltese cannot be left alone, consider other breeds for your family. Maltese dogs should not be outside in cold or wet weather unless they have a warm coat on. Maltese don't shed much fur but do need to be groomed lightly at least twice a week so Maltese will not get mats. Maltese shouldn't be fed more than 20 ounces of food throughout the day. Maltese parents should teach kids how to play with Maltese properly because Maltese are so small and easy to hurt by accident, especially younger children who may unintentionally treat them too roughly. Maltese love playing with toys and Maltese should be allowed to play outside if Maltese are trained well, Maltese would love playing fetch under supervision. Maltese Dogs tend to do better in warm climates than cold or very hot ones. Maltese dogs sleep between 12 to 14 hours a day, Maltese dogs may take long naps during the day but also like taking short walks daily which will make them happy, energetic Maltese Dogs!

Maltese dogs made their first appearance at a dog show held in Birmingham, England in 1861!
The Maltese dog breed is small, compact and sturdy with an average weight between 5 to 9 pounds (2½ – 4 kg) and height up to 8 inches (20 cm). The Maltese has a soft white coat which requires occasional grooming. Malteser Dogs do not shed much throughout the year but shed more during springtime.
