Description
Background
The Pomeranian is a breed of dog. Pomeranians are lovely dogs with thick, soft coats. They are very cute and highly energetic dogs. Pomeranians were originally bred to be large-sized watchdogs, but due to the smaller size, they make great pets even for people living in small homes or apartments. Pomeranian dogs can be red, orange, brown/yellow, white/creamy; there may be multiple shades of each color (e.g., tan and cream), and they usually have brown nose and nails, and dark eyes like round black dots (Crawford). Pomeranian dogs have been known as smurfs.
Characteristics
Pomeranian dogs are very intelligent small dogs. These dogs are strong-willed, they need to be trained gently but firmly with lots of positive reinforcement and encouragement. These dogs have a vivacious spirit that makes them enormously charming. Pomeranian dogs are cheery, bold companions who exhibit an independence that can frustrate less determined owners. Pomeranian dogs love to bark at strangers, they will show their courage by barking even if their favorite human is in danger. Pomeranian dogs are protective of their owners and therefore make good watchdogs as well as companions for people living alone or with elderly parents or grandparents, or handicapped people (Crawford). Pomeranian dogs also make good pets for children because Pomeranians are very intelligent, Pomeranian dogs are usually gentle and patient with children.
Pomeranians tend to be good with other dogs as well. Pomeranian dogs have been known as “the world’s smallest bodyguards” because of their courage and loyalty (Crawford). Pomeranian dogs will become aggressive if they feel that you or another person is being threatened or if Pomeranians think that your possessions are being threatened. Pomeranian dogs may bark at people who come to the house, but Pomeranians will not attack unless they feel that their owner is in danger (Crawford). Pomeranian dogs also make good pets for sports such as flyball and agility trials. Pomeranians can learn a huge variety of tricks, Pomeranian dogs are also quick to learn good behavior. Pomeranians can easily be trained not to bark too much by using simple training methods (Crawford). Pomeranian dogs are very fun and loving especially if you train Pomeranians well.
Pom dogs usually get along great with other pets such as cats, they are usually friendly with everyone. Poms love to walk in the park or around the block about an hour a day, although Poms need at least 10-15 minutes of play time each day or else they will start chewing on shoes or any item that they can sink their teeth into (Crawford). These dogs also like playing fetch games which is perfect for Poms because Pomeranians love to chase after balls or any item that is thrown for them. Pomeranian dogs are wonderful pets, they need lots of loving and attention every day especially if the dogs are kept as indoor pets. Pomeranians do not like being left alone for a long period of time even though Poms usually get along well with other animals such as cats and other small animals.
Poms can live up to 12-15 years if they receive proper loving care from their owners (Crawford). Poms eat about 1/4 to 1 cup of high quality dry dog food each day depending on the size of your Pom, how much physical activity your pet gets, and the age of Pomeranians. Poms love to eat especially if Pomeranian dogs are given treats or Poms are fed with people food that Pomes really like, these dogs should never be given any human food because Pomeranians can gain too much weight even though Poms are small sized dogs.
