Today we will take a look at Siberian Huskies and their history.

Siberian Huskies are medium sized working dogs. They were originally bred as sled dogs because of their endurance, speed and strength to pull heavy loads over long distances in difficult climatic conditions. Siberian Huskies (aka Siberian or “Husky”) is a northern breed and they can survive harsh temperatures that could potentially kill another dog breed. Siberian Huskies have been domesticated for thousands of years from the Chukchi people who live in what is now eastern Siberia. In fact, Siberia literally means “sleeping land” which refers to this land being so cold that, even during the summer months it never gets above freezing, hence why Siberian Husky’s ancestors needed to be so well adapted to the Siberian climate.

Siberian huskies are among the few breeds who can live and work in such cold climates, together with breeds such as the Greenland Dog and the Canadian Eskimo Dog. Siberian Huskies also helped native peoples of North America survive long polar winters where they would have previously starved without their dogs help. Siberian Huskies were first brought to Alaska by fur traders in Malamute for sled dog racing and then later used as sled dogs themselves. Siberian Huskies were first imported into England by Sir Edwin Landseer and became very popular during the early 1930’s after winning many races in Europe and America. Siberian Huskies were not married as a breed but bred randomly like cockers spaniels until they showed certain desired traits, these dogs were then bred together to produce working Siberian Huskies.

Siberian Husky’s are also called “little wolves” because of their temperament which is both loyal, affectionate but fiercely independent and intelligent making them great guard dogs. Siberian husky puppies are especially cute, they have blue eyes when they are born followed by their adult eye colour which can be any colour from brown to green or even different combinations in-between. Siberian Huskies were so popular in the early 20th century that there was a significant drop in numbers through out Europe and North America during world war 1 & 2 due to people generally not owning dogs at this time. Siberian Huskies are one of the only breeds who actually increase in numbers over time unlike most other breeds who are in decline. Siberian Huskies along with Australian Shepherds, German Shepherd’s and Collies account for more than half of the registered dog breeds in North America today. Siberian Huskies also tend to be the most common breed in North America not just because they’re very popular but due to Siberian Husky puppies being so easy to find on websites like Craigslist or Kijiji where there is usually a Siberian Husky breeder in every town. Siberian huskies “woo” when they bark which naturally draws your attention towards them when ever you hear it.

Siberian Huskies are one of the few breeds who bark for reasons other than fear, Siberian husky puppies will bark at anything that moves even if it doesn’t pose any threat whatsoever. Siberian Huskies are very easy to get along with because they’re friendly, outgoing and patient. Siberian husky puppies get on well with children too, Siberian Huskies were also breed for their gentle nature which makes them great family dogs. Siberian Huskies usually weigh between 20-30 pounds when full grown and stand 18-22 inches tall at the shoulder. Siberian Huskies come in a variety of colors but black & white is the most common colouration followed by red & white and grey & white then brown & white Siberian Husky’s tend to have large heavy frames that look a little out of proportion from some angles due to their thick coats.
