Description

Background

Boerboel is a large, muscular dog breed from South Africa. The name derives from the Afrikaans word ‘boer’, which means farmer, and ‘boel’ meaning bully or ruffian. In other words, it’s a good name for a massive bad-tempered dog that could scare even elephants! While Boers have been bred to fight lions, they are also used as guard dogs, seeing off intruders with their grim bark. Boerboels are known to be protective of their family unit; however, due to selective breeding over centuries for aggression towards wild game (lion) and aggressiveness against predators (leopards), this breed can be extremely dangerous to people around them. If you have Boerboels near your home, you should be very wary of them.

History

Boerboel was initially bred in South Africa by Boers for the purpose of guarding their farms and families against lions, leopards, snakes, and robbers. Boer boels are descendants from dogs that were brought to southern Africa during the 17th century by Dutch settlers, known as Boers or Afrikaners. Boer boel dogs were used at first only to protect livestock until they proved themselves able to defend their masters. It is also said that these types of dogs were used for hunting purposes because Boer Boels are proficient in killing wild game such as lions, leopards etc

Boerboel breed has since then been well known in South Africa and in other parts of the world. Boerboel is a rare breed that needs proper care and socialization to protect against aggression, which can be seen by an untrained Boerboel due to its high guarding instincts. Boerboels are calm, fearless dogs when they are well cared for from an early age until adulthood

Characteristics

Boer Boels have been ranked as one of the best breeds in many countries around the world today. Boer Boels make great pets when well-trained and socialized correctly. They also make good watch dogs because of their alertness. The Boer Boel makes a very loyal pet that bonds with his or her owner quickly due to their intelligence level being high. Boer Boels are also very protective of their family, territory and belongings. Boer Boels need to be socialized around strangers at an early age for them not to become wary of people that they don’t know

The first Boerboel registered with the American Kennel Club was in 1995. Boer Boels should only be bred by experienced breeders due to the risk of genetic health problems.

Boerboel can adapt well living in both cold or hot climates so long as it has shade and access to water, although too much heat can cause stress on this dog’s body which can lead to kidney failure because this breed is so heavy, however if you live in colder climate than use caution when your Boerboel is outside in the winter months. Boer Boels are strong and can adapt to most climates when well taken care of. Boer Boels when well socialized make great family pets when well experienced breeders breed them

Boerboel Breed health concerns are PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), Cracked tooth syndrome, skin problems, hip/elbow dysplasia, cysts in the tail therefore having their tails cut off, entropion which is genetic where the eyelids roll inward causing irritation to the eyes therefore Boerboel owners must have regular eye exams or surgery to help correct this problem**

The Boer Boel has a lifespan of 7-10 years depending on their health. Boer Boels are a large, muscular boned dog with a strong head and muzzle. Boer Boel colors include black and tan, mahogany-red, red fawn, brindle red fawn or red wheaten

A Boer Boel usually weighs between 50–90 kilograms (110–200 lbs.) when fully grown depending on the sex of the dog. The average height of a Boer Boel is about 60–75cm (24–30 ins) when fully grown depending on gender
